                                                   Roslyn's Story

My daughter Roslyn was diagnosed with a moderate intellectual disability at the age of 2. She was the second of my three daughters.

Roslyn attended Macquarie Hospital for Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy and when it was time for her to go to school she went firstly to Epping West public school which had a special unit for children with an intellectual disability. After 2 years it was decided that she went to a special school at Hornsby (Clarke Road Special School).

Having a child with an intellectual disability was very difficult for my family and especially her two sisters.

After working for 10 years I had to give up work because I found it too hard to work full time and look after Roslyn. We then had to manage on one income.

Roslyn finished school at 19 years of age and then attended Crowle Foundation where she still works in a workshop at Meadowbank. She is a very quiet girl and she still wants what all girls want to drive a car and get married and have children, it is a heartbreaking task having to tell her that she will never be able to do those things.

Roslyn would also like to one day move out of home and live with her friends just like other people do, and I think that is a reasonable request, that is why I joined RASAID and feel as a group we can achieve this for our children.

I have to help Roslyn to bathe and dress and she can’t be left very long on her own and is a very vulnerable girl.

I am 58 years of age and am a diabetic. My husband is 57 years of age and has arthritis. I also care for my ageing parents who both have cancer, I have now gone back to work to help ends meet and need to have some peace of mind knowing that at least Roslyn will have a place to live, and be safe and happy.
